Have you ever thought that a song was perfect? The tune was right, the melody catchy, and it was just the perfect song for whatever you might need such a song for. Then you take a closer look at the lyrics...and that’s when the love affair ends.
I’ve noticed that I’m starting to pay more and more attention to songs right now. Yes, that’s mainly because I’m planning a wedding, I’ll admit it.
But I’ve noticed that I’m constantly on the lookout for songs. Songs to dance to. Songs for the cocktail hour. Songs for the father-daughter dance. You get the picture yet? The good news is that I don’t need to look for our first dance song...we’ve known what it would be since we first started talking about our wedding plans. So that’s one down, 99 to go, so to speak.
So, the other day, I’m at work, listening to my Windows Media Player, and a song comes on...I’ll admit to working VERY hard and only half listening to the song. But it’s a song that I know, and like, and before long I’m humming along. The song is almost over when it hits me that this could be a good song for the wedding. To my knowledge the song is about angels looking out for you and all, which ties in nicely with us nicely.
You see, ever since we first started dating, B has always referred to his angel sending me his way. That would be his mom, who passed several years before we met. And when my grandmother died the year before B and I met, I constantly refer to her to J as MeMa being our “special angel” watching over us from heaven. So a song that dealt with angels is perfect for a wedding song. It would even be a great song to maybe do the processional too...or so I think.
In the back of my mind, I remember seeing a post somewhere (probably weddingbee.com) that talked about songs that seemed to be fine until you looked closer at the lyrics. Well, a quick internet search that evening led me to the song’s lyrics. They are as follows:

“Every now and then soft as breath upon my skin
I feel you come back again
And it's like you haven't been gone a moment from my side
Like the tears were never cried
Like the hands of time are holding you and me
And with all my heart I'm sure we're closer than we ever were
I don't have to hear or see, I've got all the proof I need
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, I believe
Chorus
That when you die your life goes on
It doesn't end here when you're gone
Every soul is filled with light
It never ends and if I'm right
Our love can even reach across eternity
I believe, I believe
Forever, you're a part of me
Forever, in the heart of me
And I'll hold you even longer if I can
The people who don't see the most
Say that I believe in ghosts
And if that makes me crazy, then I am
'Cause I believe
There are more than angels watching over me
I believe, I believe”
A great song to be sure. But as I read the lyrics, it hits me. This song isn’t about angels. It’s about MORE than angels. Ghosts, to be exact. Ghosts of your past loves. Hmmm...maybe it’s NOT the best wedding song, like I was thinking it could be.
I just can’t believe that I was so wrong about this song. I mean seriously, if you had asked me before I read the lyrics, I would have sworn that it was about angels watching over us...which if it was would have been perfect. But since it’s not, is it still right?
What do you think? Do you think that it’s ok to use a song, even if it’s not totally fitting? It’s close...but not quite right. And since I just kind of stumbled upon it, and it has no close/personal meaning for me, it’s not that big of a deal if I cross it off the list and keep going...
